Hehe, well I built my PC with the money I saved during a 5 month deployment to Afghanistan when I was Active Duty Air Force. Altogether, and with rush shipping (my old PC had died), it cost me around $3000 about 2 years ago. At the time it was completely premo except for the video card, which was a generation behind, but still great.
I'm gearing up for an upgrade to a mobo with PCI-E 2 and DDR3 support and a new proccy, Video card, and memory...but it's gonna be a few months
The only bad thing about my computer is that with the case and fans I have I can't overclock it at all. Even upping my RAM voltage from 1.8 - 1.9 seems to have caused me some issues with DoD:S
oh shit are you still in the air force? me, norris, and ghostbear are all in the army.. i did a year in iraq in '05 and norris n ghostbear are supposed to deploy here soon for a year so..
i got out the army in early '06 but i just came back in.. but i really wanted to go air force cuz they take much better care of you..
what do you do in the AF ?
oh and thanks for your service
I finished my original 4 years and jumped ship. Now I'm a weekend warrior, a traditional reservist. As a matter of fact, i'm going to miss at least the first half of the SEC Championship this weekend due to have Drill sad day.
I'm a Satellite Communications Technician for a Combat Communications unit stationed in Georgia. We provide the quick and dirty comm for bare base support or close air support type stuff.
I do the same thing now in the civilian world, just on a bigger scale. I basically travel all around the world on a moment's notice fixing SatComm equipment when it breaks. It's kinda neat...but it gets in the way of my hobbies big time, in that I don't really have any except what time I can find to game online.
Here's a piccy of me when I was in the sandbox.
Here's a piccy of me working on my equipment over there
and here's a couple recent pics of me hanging out in Miami (har har)

and here's a recent pic of me on vacation in Chicago and the Navy Pier
well that's cool. glad to see you have a job you can actually use in the civilian world.. im a tanker. and well i cant really just go around blowing stuff up in the civilian world ;(
Soooo my rig has been having issues as of late. It seems that sometimes, after playing DoD:S for periods of time more than about 30-45 minutes, my computer begins stutter. My frame rate drops from the 67fps cap I have it on to 20 fps, and my net graph shows my ping jumping from 40-60, despite the scoreboard still showing me at 40. The game runs even worse than it would at a true 20 fps. It's a slide show and almost impossible to work with.
After much investigation

I found that each time this happened, the Intel Thermal Analysis Tool showed my pc running at 60 degrees Celcius.
Considering my computer is running bone stock, with no overclocking...this is a rediculous temperature to be reaching while playing a video game for a half hour. So my suspicion is that my poor old compy overheating. I further speculate that after 2 years of running, either my fans are dying and not running like they used to, or there's just so much dust in my Freezer 7 Pro CPU Fan that it's an insulator instead of a cooler. It's also possible that there's something wrong with my initial application of Arctic Silver 5.
I could probably fix this all real quick by removing my CPU fan and blowing everything out real nice with some compressed air....
...but what fucking fun would that be?
LETS THROW SOME MONEY AT IT!
My system is currently cooled by 2 Scythe S-Flex 120mm fans and a Freezer 7 Pro CPU Fan. The Scythes each move about 49CFM of air. I'm going to remove those and replace them with 2 120mm fans I found at a local computer store that move about 120CFM of Air. I'm going to rig those to a fan controler that i'm going to install in one of my extra drive bays. I'm also going to replace my CPU cooler with one of those massive behemoths of a fan/heatsink that rate so well on all the consumer reports, and i'm going to do a fresh application of Silver 5. I'm going to top it all off with a OCZ Memory Cooler that will cool my 4gb of memory...
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
TAKE THAT OVERHEATING!
If my PC still drops the frame rate for no good reason in DoD:S after this, I will shoot right through the main board with a Silver Plated Kimber .45. I will then proceed to turn said .45 on myself and shoot myself in the fuckin' face.
I pulled out my Arctic Freezer 7 and Replaced it with a OCZ Vendetta 2, replaced my old rear fan with a 3000 RPM Scythe, added an OCZ Memory Cooler, and blew out all the dust. Now i'm idling with my CPU at 27 degrees C (oh look it just dropped to 25) and my system at 31...and that's without the fresh coat of Arctic Silver 5 being broke in yet.
No more overheating for me. Hopefully that really was the cause of my problems, and it's now fixed...
I edited OP to include pics of my system pre-cooling upgrade. I'll post pics of the new stuff later today.
Also, my desk setup is different now than the one in the pic. I now have side-by-side moniitors, not top-over-bottom, and i know long have the surround setup...since I never used it as surround sound.
