OK... I'm back in the USA and my bro completely fucked my PC up.... i mean, he's installed so much shit and he didn't even bother starting a new profile or anything... so i'm just gonna reformat and reinstall windows and start clean....
the question is... since i'm reinstalling anyway, should i go ahead and upgrade to vista (which will only be $15 from school) or just stay with XP? i'm kinda torn b/c i wouldn't mind switching to Vista and start getting used to it but at the same time, i don't have a DX10 card so it might not be really worth it...
has anyone switched to Vista from XP and see any major performance hits? i'm hoping driver support at this point will be fine, but i should probably do some more research into that first.

i havnt checked out your member page to see what kind of rig your running, but if you have a decent processor and at least 2 gigs of memory, then vista isnt that bad. there are some quirks that have been ironed out with service pack 1. i run vista ultimate 64 bit. so i have the best OS of the vista series. from what i heard is that the 32 bit versions are junk. i have had no trouble with drivers , but all of my stuff is compatible. i would stay XP if i only had the choice of a 32 bit version of vista, but if you have decent specs, and are offered the 64 bit version for real cheap, then i would hop on it.
I have both XP and Vista Home Premium 64bit installed on my computer. I used to use Vista all the time, but switched back when I realized that my games ran much smoother in XP. I think I didn't really have all my stuff optimized to work with well Vista, which was probably the problem. But I was too lazy to try and fix it, so I have just been using XP full time. You could go either way and be alright, I think.
well i run a e8200 and i hate vista, it makes my machine feel like a pentium 4 not to mention if you run a aftermarket sound card vista may not work with it and if you have a nforce chipset beware vista sometimes will only run in single core mode if your using a ati card, witch sucks!
I've switched to Vista twice and have ended up going back to XP both times. I just can't deal with all the little nuisances. As a whole, Vista runs fine on a decent rig, but there are just a lot of little tings that can drive you batty.
Id say 3gigs in minimum for Vista 32-bit. I use 1.6-to-2.0 gigs ram just idle in vista. I have a lot of programs, etc running but you need minimum 2 gigs but 3 for 32 bit is best or 4 for 64 bit. Vista is a memory hog and that's why new Intel Core i7 motherboards start off at 16gigs and I believe go up to 32 gigs of ram.
