Post Region Free DVD Firmware Posted: Sun Apr 27, 2008 1:22 pm

OK, so as you may or may not know, DVD's are encoded to certain regions that they can only be played in that region... AKA American DVD's can only be played in America, European DVD's can only be played in Europe etc. They accomplish this by hardcoding or wiring this into the DVD players. So you'd think for PC drives it would be different... right? Nope... not different at all.

So yeah anyway, the point of this thread is if anybody has any ideas how to fix this for my MacBook Pro. The firmware has it set up so you can change the region, but only a limited number of times. I'm reluctant to do this, but at this point I don't see why not because I'm going to be here for another 5 months and I don't have any American DVD's with me.

I have found this awesome thread: http://forums.mactalk.com.au/20/46854-how-make-your-dvd-drive-region-free.html

However the updater will not run for me... So I guess my question is, is anybody familiar enough with Mac OS X (Feedback?) to tell me why it wouldn't run?

Any and all helpful comments would be appreciated.

hmm ok yeah... external dvd drives are like 50€.... but i just thought of something else. does anyone know if an external harddrive enclosure will run a DVD drive? it's still an IDE port... not sure if that would work, but that would be a really cheap solution.

it's not going to be american, as i haven't bought it yet. but 10€ compared to 50€ is a good deal.... or i'll just eat one of my region changes on my drive here and worry about hacking it later.

I wouldn't worry about using one of those 5 times you get to change , All you have to do is re-install to get them back. You didn't get the uboat comment Laughing

lol.. no.. i got it. it was just such a groaner, i didn't want to make you think you were funny or something, Razz

but no, actually those 5 changes are built into the FIRMware, not just the OS. but either way, I think it's an OS problem with it not running the hack.... so yeah.... just went ahead and changed the region code, i'll just have to make sure not to change it until i get back. then I'll be ok.
