I've gone this route a couple times, but it wasn't worth it to me due to the lack of HD. Vista was supposed to bring cable card capability to Media Center so those of us with HD equipment could enjoy our digital cable packages in Media Center. Alas, only Dell was allowed to sell the device and you had to buy a full system. The device is coupled with the system and will not work in a BYO setup. Currently, other than the Dell solution mentioned, the only HDTV you can get in Media Center is OTA. So, I've resolved myself to the fact that I'm stuck with the paltry 160 GB DVR from my cable provider. There are other HTPC solutions via Linux and some other Windows apps, but bottom line is none of them support digital cable. Consider this rant my official up yours to the content protection freaks that are insuring that we cannot use content the way we the consumers choose.
yes, i agree completely... music industry seems to have caught on with DRM free mp3's... just wait til bandwidth gets better and more and more people are downloading movies and tv shows and they'll get rid of it... i hope.
RE: the HTPC however, i was thinknig i may risk it and fool with modding my ps3 with linux, since really the only thing i'm looking to do is play divx cd's or video files off my hard drive. DVR capability is a moot point when i download half my shows anyway =P

Yellowdog for PS3 is nice. It has AIM/MSN client witch is pretty cool and has a lot of PC like features. If you are just looking o stream video and music why not set your main PC to share media and use the PS3 to browse and play it. Or build a media server to do just that.
